Anita Vozik
Basketmaker and Chair restorer
The first time that I fell in love with baskets I was 9 years old. I am Hungarian and I have been to lots of markets where beautiful woven baskets are everywhere.
Before I started the Creative Basketry course I completed some short courses. Whilst doing the courses more and more things became clear. To me, natural materials and three-dimensional items form and structure are usually of primary importance. Surface pattern and colour come later when consideration has been given to the structure. I am also interested in organic forms and shapes. and how ideas of three dimensionality and physical and psychological spaces relate to this.
Following on from the City & Guilds course, I apprenticed at John Lawler's antique restoration workshop. John Lawler is a second-generation Irish seat weaver and upholsterer based in North London and becoame my mentor in traditional upholstery. During my apprenticeship I also worked on traditional cane and rush chairs. I now run my own seat-weaving business repairing cane and rush chairs as well as wicker furniture.
