Janice Brooklyn
Whilst studying for a Book Arts degree at UAL I spent several of my summer breaks exploring the exciting world of basketry short courses at the City Lit. These courses complimented the making skills and experimentation that I enjoyed most about my degree. I discovered uses for paper beyond the leaves of books and began to try and incorporate the techniques of plaiting and random weaving into my book making. I then decided to complete the two year City and Guilds course in creative basketry to extend my knowledge of the huge range of techniques and skills that are part of basketry.
I've continued to work with paper, cane and recycled materials to create objects and shapes that have a more sculptural aesthetic rather than a form with a useful function.
My recent work has focused on using dyed centre cane combined with driftwood and found pieces of wood to create organic forms that appear to grow from the wood - the possibilities appear to be endless.
